Tejano

In the middle to late 1800’s Tejano’s began playing music with a more European sound. Schottische, polkas, and waltzes were incorporated into the Mexican music genre, giving birth to what would later be referred to as, Tex Mex music. Tex Mex music was further influenced by the immigration of Germans to South Texas in the middle 1800’s. This Tex Mex music was actually European music played with a Tejano style, thus becoming true Tex Mex music. The music further evolved with the introduction of the German accordion. Bands of Tejano musicians playing at local dances in South Texas were referred to as conjuntos. By the 1950’s the guitar, bass, accordion, and drums were the standard instruments used for playing Tex Mex music.
